We are sad to announce the passing of our mother, wife, and friend, Mila - Majcen - Volovsek - Maurer, on October 18, 2023. She was born on June 30, 1925, in the suburbs of Celje, Slovenia, and spent the first thirty years of her life in that lovely setting. Another thirty years later she married Frank Volovsek and immigrated to Canada, where Frank had a job as shop foreman for Cassiar Asbestos Corporation. Travelling with her was her 11-year-old son Walter. In 1957 the family relocated to Chilliwack in order to provide better schooling for their children. A daughter, Yasmin, was born in 1958. Construction of the Hugh Keenleyside Dam brought the family to Castlegar, where Frank and Mila eventually separated. Mila married Wilhelm Maurer in 1994 and they settled happily in their riverside home at Brilliant.
As per her request, there will be no service. Her ashes will be sent to Slovenia to join her mother in the family plot.
