February 28, 1924 - December 25, 2019
Nora was born on February 28, 1924 in Brilliant, BC. She passed away peacefully on Christmas Day, December 25, 2019.
Nora was predeceased by her husband Fred, partner John, daughters Violet and Betty as well as two sisters Polly and Ann, brother Pete, and son-in law Pat.
She is survived by her daughter Elaine (Al), Grandchildren Shauna (Ian), Chloe (Brandon), Jamie, Sarah (Gord) and Jenny (Scott). Great grandchildren Galina, Violet, James, Darrian, Joshua, Mckayla, sister Fran, and many nieces and nephews.
Nora lived a long and full life filled with travel and adventure. She was the Baba "extraordinaire"! Always baking and making borscht of course. She had the "best" gardens, yes three of them, in Castlegar with the best tomatoes! Everything she cooked or made was always "made with love". It was impossible to leave her home hungry and you would often leave with a special "care package".
She loved to tell people about her travels and was often heard to say "Oh I've been to Hawaii nine times, twice to Russia, Cuba, Jamaica, much of the United States and across Canada". On one trip to Morocco with her local lady friends - she even rode the camel - that was what she said making it sound like there was only one camel and she rode it.
Mom was extremely proud of her Doukhobor Faith and a devout and long supporter within her community. She would always arrive at a loved one's service with a special poem in hand to comfort families. She felt it was her duty as an elder of the community to be there for the family. On that note if anyone has a poem they would like to read at her service, they are most welcome to read it.
A service will be held on Monday, January 6, 2020 at the Brilliant Cultural Centre. Viewing will be from 9:00 am - 10:00 am. Casket will be closed at 10:00 am when the service begins at the family's request. Following the service the burial will be at the Brilliant Cemetery with lunch to follow at the Brilliant Cultural Centre.
The family would like to thank Linda and Jane and everyone at Castlewood who took such good care of Mom, Dr.Vasil was incredible and also took amazing care of her, and the doctors and nurses from Trail. A very big thank you to her granddaughter Shauna and her family who drove back and forth to Trail and were such a comfort to Baba, and the many cousins and friends who took the time to visit in Castlewood and at the hospital.
Castlegar Funeral Chapel in care of arrangements.
