In loving memory ~
Our dear father, Paul Klit, passed away on January 13, 2023 in Castlegar, B.C. at the age of 96. Paul was the eldest of seven boys born and raised in East Trail, B.C. to Soren Paulsen and Metthea Marie (nee Jensen) Klit who had emigrated to Canada from Denmark in the early 1900's.
Paul is survived by his brothers Einer and John Klit, brothers-in-law Lino and Carlo Parisotto, sisters-in-law Glenn, Marion, Barb and Joan Klit, his children Peter Klit, Kathleen (Ian) Sheppard, Brenda (Doug) MacAskill and Perry (Diana) Klit as well as nine grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his loving wife Enes (nee Parisotto) in 1997, his parents, brothers Henry, George, Arnold and Edward Klit, and daughter-in-law Meredith.
After graduating from UBC in Civil Engineering in 1950, Paul became a Professional Engineer, working with B.C. Hydro for most of his career. Dedicated to his responsibilities as the in-charge resident engineer during construction of multiple major B.C. hydroelectric dam projects, he received recognition for his contributions to these provincial energy mega projects.
An elder of the congregation of St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Castlegar, Paul served his church faithfully. He embraced any chore or duty, from cleaning to council to laying floors to helping to design and construct the church steeple. In return, the church community enriched his life.
Paul loved his many collections, garage sales, and his daily word and number puzzles. He enjoyed the exercise that maintaining his large yard gave him, only yielding to help from others for the wood-chopping, lawn mowing and other tasks in his last few years.
Paul was a devoted husband to Enes, caring for her himself at home and then making daily visits to her while in hospice care during her lengthy illness. He was very close to his immediate and extended families and liked nothing more than visits with his growing family. December visits to the West Coast and Vancouver Island were annual and special. This tradition included the family gathering to celebrate his birthday, followed by Christmas and New Year's cheer at one of his children's homes. He was always delighted when any of his family visited him in his own home, regardless of the visit's length.
Paul was the family genealogist, keeping accurate records of family events and connecting with relatives abroad. After retirement, both Paul and Enes travelled to Denmark and Italy to meet extended family and to the Middle East to visit family and friends, and Paul returned alone after Enes' passing.
Our family extends sincere appreciation to Paul's many friends and fellow parishioners and, for their care in his later years, Dr. Erin Charman and the staff of Talarico Place. Collectively, they have enriched Paul's quality of life through their boundless attention to shared life experiences and, later, his very compassionate care.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Castlegar, or the British Columbia Parkinsons Society be considered.
Funeral Services will be held at St. Peters Lutheran Church in Castlegar on February 21, 2023, at 11:30 a.m.
