Phillip was born in Thrums, BC, on December 16, 1929 to parents Fred and Polly Konkin. He received his schooling in Castlegar School District and went on to the Vancouver Vocational Institute of Automotive and Mechanical and further completed his Apprenticeship and Training in the lower mainland and coastal areas. Upon his return to the Kootenays he met and married his one true love, Molly Malania Kanigan, of Blewett, in September of 1953. They settled and made their home in Thrums. In 1956 Phillip built his service station in Thrums, known as ‘Phil’s Auto Service’ which he operated with Molly and the help of their young sons for fourteen years. During this time Phillip was also employed as a part-time bus driver for the Castlegar School District. In 1970 Philip sold the service station and was employed full-time with the Castlegar School District in a Supervisory position where with his quiet, reserved manner, he dedicated himself to his job. There he enjoyed working with and meeting many of his life-long friends. Philip was also a life-long member of the USCC, DCA and IOE. Retiring from the School District in 1991, Phillip stayed very busy. He loved all outdoor activities, golfing, and hiking, cross country skiing, fishing, bird watching and picking mushrooms and huckleberries. He especially enjoyed camping and exploring our many Hot Springs. He spent a lot of time travelling on his motor home with Molly, spending many summers on the Kootenay, Slocan and Arrow Lakes where their friends had summer homes. Phillip spent countless summers and hours volunteering and helping with the construction of the Whatshan Lake Retreat. The last few years Philip and Molly had set up a trailer at the Retreat and was his haven and second home. One of Phillip’s greatest pleasures in life was his two grandsons, Derek and Corey. They lived next door and he was able to spend much time with them and watch them grow and was very proud of the young men they have grown into. Phillip is survived by his loving wife, Molly, of 63 years, son, Ken & wife Sandra, son, Phil & wife Dee, son, Ben, grandsons, Derek and Corey, sister, Annie (Andy) Malahoff and many nieces and nephews. Phillip was predeceased by his parents, Fred Konkin, 1977, Polly Konkin, 1985 and younger brother, Walter Konkin, 1999. We, the family of Phillip Konkin, wish to express our gratitude to each and everyone in our Community for your comfort and kind words during this time.
