June 22, 2021
1923-2021 ~ It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our Mother, Roberta 'Betty' Moffat on June 22, 2021. Mom passed as she lived; with dignity, grace and entirely on her own terms. Her two sons, Michael and Paul remained at her side as she made her final journey to be with her husband of 73 years, our father Robert Moffat, who predeceased Mom in 2016.
Born in Victoria BC in 1923, Mom was more comfortable in pants than a dress and could outrun both boys and girls her age with ease. She maintained her speed and strength well into her adult life as her sons can well attest.
A woman who radiated power and authority, seemingly inconsistent within her quiet demeanor and diminutive stature: She was rich in humanity and generous of spirit. Mom was one of the strongest women we have known. She derived great pride in her accomplishment of achieving the 'Worthy Grand Matron' status from the lodge of the Eastern Star but that pride paled compared to her pride of her family. Mom is survived by two sons, four grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Nothing could bring her power and authority to a more strident outcome than a perceived threat to her family. Like a beautiful kestrel hovering below the clouds she could be called down from the blue, unsheath her verbal talons and rend an embarrassed apology from the naïve offender. Rarely was the indiscretion repeated.
We were primal clay before a giant who breathed life and pride into her family. At times cracked and flawed, we, her children, are all that we are because of who she was. We have wept at her loss, reflected on her gifts and remembered. We will always remember.
