September 22, 1937 - April 16, 2020
With great sadness, the family of Shirley Joyce Benton wish to announce her passing on Thursday, April 16, 2020. Granny will be missed by her sons; Jack and Brady, grandchildren; Tim, Brady, and Madison, great grandson Nixon, and her brother Jack (Diana) Stevens. She will also be missed by the many dear friends she met along her journey, including Herb and Jean Friedel.
Shirlee was predeceased by her husband Steve, her youngest son Timmy, and more recently her sisters Jean and Lorna, and her daughter-in-law Georgina.
Shirlee was born in Saskatchewan on September 22, 1937. As a young girl, she moved with her family to B.C., attending school in and around Vancouver. After Shirlee married Steve, they went to where Steve's work took them, making lifelong friends while living in Hudson's Hope, Princeton, and Fernie, before settling in Castlegar in the early 70's.
Shirlee loved looking after the folks while a care-aid at Raspberry Lodge, and she truly enjoyed working with the public during her years at Extra Foods. Shirlee will be remembered by everyone that knew her for her kindness, generous heart, and genuine concern for others. She always put everyone else's needs before her own, never thinking of herself regardless of the many obstacles she faced (and conquered) throughout her life. Shirlee loved to dance or get together with friends for a game of cards, and was a longtime member of the Royal Canadian Legion.
Thanks to everyone at Castlewood Village for their care and friendship.
Shirlee's life will be celebrated by family and friends later in the year.
