November 10, 1933 - December 3, 2018
It is with sadness and deep love that the family of Verna Nevakshonoff announces that Verna passed away peacefully on December 3, 2018.

Verna was born on November 10, 1933 in Glade, BC to Bill and Polly Kinakin. She is survived by her immediate family, son Cyril, sister Lucy (Alex) Wasilenkoff, and brother Bill Kinakin and numerous nieces and nephews, extended family and many great friends. She is predeceased by her parents Bill and Polly and by sister Tina (Steve) Gretchen.

Verna married William Nevakshonoff on November 7, 1959 and lived in Fernie and Kimberley before settling in Castlegar, BC and starting a family. She moved to Glade in 1975 where she made her home and was proud to be part of the Glade Hall Ladies Cooking Group.

Verna had a life-long love for gardening and her vegetable gardens always produced delicious and bountiful crops. Verna took pleasure in her miniature roses in her small flower bed and her other beautiful rose plants. Everything she nurtured produced beauty and peace.

Verna cared greatly for every being that touched her life - family, friends and pets - and it was important to her that everyone around her was happy and felt loved. She was a friendly, generous, gentle, very patient and kind-hearted woman. Those who knew her enjoyed her sense of humour, wisdom and curiosity. Her good-natured disposition was consistently on display in her genuinely warm and ever-ready smile. She had strength of character and did her best to persevere through many adversities and setbacks.

Verna maintained a very strong Doukhobour faith throughout her life and was proud of her heritage. In recent times, she knew the importance of being with her lady-friends from the village as often as she could.

Verna moved to Talarico Place in March 2018 where she received professional, respectful compassionate care until her passing. Her family wishes to thank Dr. Merritt and the wonderful staff at Talarico Place for their abundant kindness and daily company and attention. Also, we wish to thank the staff at Castlegar Funeral Chapel and to the various Mens' and Ladies' groups affiliated with the Glade Hall for their advice and support. Funeral services took place on December 13th at the Glade Hall followed by interment at the Glade Cemetery.

Much gratitude goes out to all those who sent cards and letters, made phone calls, and stopped by to offer their condolences and to deliver meals - and to all the relatives, friends and neighbours for their support.
