Our beautiful wife, mother and grandmother passed away peacefully in the loving presence of her family on November 24, 2018.
Verna was born on July 26, 1933 in Shoreacres, BC to Peter and Vera Kalmakoff. She is survived by her immediate family, loving husband Nick, daughters Vicky (Bill) McNiece, Joanie (Alex) Kootnekoff and Deb (Rob) Geier and grandchildren Eric (Melissa), Kevin, Brandon, Robynn and Hannah, one sister, Lillian (Mike) Semenoff and nine nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by brothers Peter ( Polly) and Bill (Katherine).
Verna married Nick on June 6, 1953 and lived in Robson BC where they raised their three daughters.
Verna had a passion for gardening, cultivating a vegetable garden for preserves and a lovely rose garden for its beauty. She was an accomplished seamstress, quilter and wove rugs. She was very hospitable; meals and snacks were always a treat as she loved to cook and bake.
Verna was a kind, gentle, caring and wise woman who always had a positive approach to life. People appreciated her quick wit, quiet sense of humour and curiosity about the world. Verna maintained a very strong Doukhobour faith throughout her life and contributed to the Doukhobour community for many years. Above all, Verna cherished her family dearly.
Verna moved to the Castleview Care Centre in June 2018 where she received excellent care until her passing. Her family wishes to thank Dr. Ankenbauer and the wonderful staff at Castleview for their professional and compassionate attention. Also, we wish to deeply thank the staff at Castlegar Funeral Chapel and the various Mens' and Ladies' Groups affiliated with the Brilliant Cultural Centre for their advice and support. Funeral services took place on November 28th at the Brilliant Cultural Centre followed by interment at the Brilliant Cemetery. Much gratitude goes out to family, friends and relatives for their support.
We are forever grateful for all the love, the courage, the laughter and the wisdom of a lifetime. Verna lives on in the hearts of those who continue to love her, We miss her dearly.
