Nov 28, 2017
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of our husband and father Werner Schulz on November 28, 2017 at 78 years of age from injuries sustained in a serious car accident.

He passed peacefully with his family at his side at the Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital in Trail, BC.

Werner was born in Austria and immigrated to Canada in 1953, settling in Toronto.  Werner earned his PhD in Physical Chemistry in 1966 from the University of Toronto.  That same year he married the love of his life, Ingrid, who were married for 51 years.  Together, they migrated west in 1966 to begin teaching at the newly opened Selkirk College in Castlegar teaching all levels of Math, Physics, and Chemistry to thousands of students for the next 38 years.

Always a visionary, he converted Volkswagens to run on hydrogen in 1977 and electricity in 1978.  And equally a rebel, during the only two labour strikes of his career, he crossed his own picket line because he believed in the essential need for education and students deserving to be taught if they were willing to come to his class (and many did).

In retirement, Werner enjoyed a quiet life with Ingrid and family, enjoying long walks on the local logging roads.  Later in life, he devoted all of his time and strength to care for Ingrid, whose health has been in recent decline.  Always a man of strong faith, we are confident that Werner is with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Werner is survived by his wife, Ingrid, son Richard (Paula) Schulz, son Robert (Pam) Schulz, daughter Rene (Ian) Constable, three grandchildren and two great grand-children; also his brother Gerhard Schulz, and sister Hanni (Roland) Gebauer.

Werner is predeceased by his parents, Bruno and Wilhelmina.

We would like to say a heartfelt thank-you and appreciation to our first responders and the caring team in the Emergency and ICU who cared for Werner in his final days.

There will be no service at the request of the family.

In lieu of flowers, donations are greatly appreciated for the Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital Health Foundation.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Castlegar Funeral Chapel.
