“What art offers is space – a certain breathing room for the spirit.” John Updike

As artists make their way in the world, inevitably they’ll need support systems. This support might begin with a parent noticing a concentrated art energy exchange in their child, so materials are provided, or a teacher encouraging a student’s visible interest and talent, or perhaps a gallery confidently choosing to represent an artist.

We’re fortunate in our community to have the West Kootenay Regional Arts Council, in partnership with the Columbia Basin Trust (CKCA), offering thousands of dollars annually to local artists via grant funding that assists and supports artists’ projects. Those who have applied for grants can attest to the fact that grant writing is not for the faint of heart! Detailed thought and planning is applied to proposing a viable vision, balancing a budget, and presenting a do-able project that then goes before an adjudication committee to be intensively scrutinized!

Castlegar Arts Council (CAC) approached Castlegar artist Sonja Rosenberg, recipient of a 2024 CKCA grant, for insight into her project that received funding and her grant writing process.

CAC: Is this your first experience with grant writing/receiving funds to create an artistic vision?

SR: I've navigated the grant writing process before. In Manitoba, I was able to secure funding from two Manitoba Craft Council Bursaries and a project grant from the Winnipeg Arts Council, which was a valuable learning experience in a competitive setting. However, this CKCA grant is my first in British Columbia, and has highlighted the ongoing challenge of articulating a clear artistic vision, budget, and timeline to demonstrate your preparation and commitment to your project.

CAC: What was the impetus for writing this grant?

SR: I have been eager to push my artistic boundaries and explore new techniques in my studio practice, and I wanted to connect meaningfully with my new community in Castlegar. This particular Arts for Communities Grant perfectly aligned with my goals, as it emphasizes both community engagement and fostering artistic growth.

CAC: As a mother of four children, when/how is the art making happening?!

SR: It's a constant negotiation, really. As a mother of four, the demands of home life are ever-present. But art is such an important part of who I am, so I find ways to make it work. It's about finding those precious pockets of quiet where I can immerse myself in my creativity. It's not always perfect, but it's my reality, and I wouldn't have it any other way."

Sonja’s artwork, along with other local artists’ creations, will be exhibited in Castlegar Artwalk 2025. This is an inspiring arts and culture event that takes place annually in our community from June to September. A tour brochure will be available throughout the city indicating participating venues and artists.
