Mini-U went over big

Letter writer offers thanks for Selkirk College program

A big thanks to Selkirk College for hosting last week's Mini-U (Mini University) for elementary school children. The full day of activities was structured so the kids could experience attending college/university. It's one thing for parents to talk to their children about the importance of post-secondary education. It's another thing altogether for our kids to experience a day of campus life, walking the halls and envisioning themselves there in the future.

The day consisted of structured mini-classes where the instructors prepared short and engaging sessions: English Lit, Chemistry, Spanish, and Earth Sciences. This was an experience my son said was the "best field trip ever." It's so important to instill a love of life long learning in our kids, and Selkirk did an excellent job of giving them a real-life, hands-on learning experience.

A special thanks also to my children's school, Brent Kennedy Elementary, for participating, and to both Elizabeth Lund and Lori Barkley of Selkirk for their enthusiasm, energy, and organization. A real gift to our children and community. Thank you!
