UPDATE: Registration deadline extended

A Castlegar Grade 12 student is turning her love of basketball into a capstone project focused on helping to create a new outdoor basketball court for the community.

Last spring, a committee consisting of Rotarians, Interact Club members, The Classic Foundation, Stanley Humphries Secondary students and other supporters approached Castlegar City Council with a proposal to develop an outdoor basketball court. The group pledged to fundraise to pay for the project if the city would provide the land to put it on.

Project costs are estimated at $174,000 based on a similar court built recently in the City of Nelson.

In December, city council decided to set aside a portion of Millennium Park for the project.

Abby Trudel has been playing basketball for six years and loves the sport.

She says she also enjoys helping and giving back to the community. So when she was approached by a teacher about helping with the outdoor court project, "Of course I said yes," Abby told Castlegar News.

"After I said yes to doing my part to help build the court, they brought the idea of a 3v3 basketball tournament to me, and I thought it would be a fantastic fundraiser."

The 3v3 basketball tournament is open to the entire community. It will take place at Stanley Humphries Secondary School, during the weekend of April 25-27.

The tournament will have age categories ranging from U14 through adult and include boys, girls and co-ed teams. The cost is $100 per three-person team.

Posters with QR code links to registration forms can be found all over Castlegar and more information is available on the outdoor basketball court project's Instagram castlegar.outdoor.court.
