Stanley Humphries Secondary School was the site for a senior girls basketball tournament over the weekend and the home team took third place overall.
Coach John Ritchie said the best game of the tournament for the home team was their final game which was against Prince Charles Secondary School from Creston — they won by one point almost at the buzzer.
“It was a kind of exciting game,” said Ritchie. “One of my players [Jamie Horning] went to the line, down one with 15 seconds left and made two free-throws and then we defended and ended up winning.”
“Our girls are very young — they haven’t had a lot of basketball experience compared to other folks,” explained Ritchie. “Every game they improved.”
“Our defence is outstanding, but we need to improve offensively — and that is what they did, especially the last few minutes of the last game.”
Eight teams participated in the tournament — JL Crowe Secondary from Trail, LV Rogers Secondary from Nelson, Boundary Central Secondary from Midway, Selkirk Secondary from Kimberley, Nakusp Secondary, Fernie Secondary, Prince Charles Secondary School from Creston and Stanley Humphries Secondary.
Kimberley won the final game over Fernie, taking home first place.
