The Castlegar Atoms Purple Cobras won the 2017 Nelson Atom Tournament held Nov. 24 to 26.
It was a thrilling weekend of hockey in Nelson with two Castlegar teams meeting up in the finals on Sunday.
Both teams went 3-0 in the round robin, advancing to the semi-final play. On Sunday morning the Castlegar Purple Cobras beat the Nelson Leafs 2 by a 6-1 score, while the Castlegar Wolverines beat Nelson Leafs 1 team 9-8. Both teams advanced to what turned out to be a very exciting championship game.
The game went back and forth with the teams tied at three heading into the final period. The Purple Cobras had a strong third period and came out on top by a final score of 6-4. This was the Purple Cobra’s second tournament win of the season.
The Castlegar Atoms will be holding their home tournament Jan. 26 to 28, 2018. The teams would like to encourage everyone in the community to come out and support our local players.
