Two Castlegar skaters excelled at the Kootenay Regional Championships held Feb. 14-16 in Creston, bringing home six medals along with being selected as the winners of the club poster competition.
Payton Fowler won Gold in STAR 10/Gold Dance, Bronze in Open Team Elements and came in sixth in STAR 6 Freeskate.
Anaya Molitwenik won bronze in Open Team Elements, Bronze in Gold Artistic, silver in STAR 6 Individual Team Elements, silver in STAR 6 Freeskate and came in sixth in STAR 7 Freeskate.
The Castlegar Skating Club says the skaters, alongside their coach, Candice Soukeroff, proudly represented their club with grace and distinction and a stellar display of sportsmanship, skill and determination.
At the competition, Molitwenik was awarded the Coaches Junior Artistic Award, presented by the coaches to the Junior skater who displays an outstanding artistic connection to their music in a program. She was also selected as one of a team of 10 skaters that will represent the Kootenay Region at the Super Series event in Kelowna at the end of February.
Along with the competition, both girls underwent skills testing. Skaters above STAR 5 only have two opportunities a year to pass testing to move ahead to new levels.
Molitwenik passed five High Tests and earned her Gold Feet in Artistic Skating at the early age of 13.
Fowler passed three High Tests and earned her Gold Feet in Skills at this competition, but also earned Gold Feet in Artistic back in December.
