The Castlegar Curling Club was host to 20 teams last weekend for a mixed bonspiel.

The event included a large showing from local teams as well as teams from Nelson, Salmo and Grand Forks and some curlers from as far away as Cold Lake, Alta. and Quesnel.

Two Castlegar teams made it to the final round of the “A” Event with the Bill VanYzerloo rink defeating the Dean Horning rink for the win.

The Rick Cutler rink from Nelson won the “B” Event, and Castlegar rinks took the remaining events — Jaimie Ingram the “C” Event and Dan Knutson the “D” Event.

Event organizer Heather Nichols was happy with how everything went over the weekend but acknowledged it couldn’t have happened without all of the help and support from volunteers including the Castlegar retirees curling club that helped keep the ice clean and the men’s club who tended bar.

“To run the event, it takes a ton of volunteers and we are very fortunate to have such a giving club,” she said.

“The ice conditions were fabulous, we had no known injuries — that is really a bonus,” explained Nichols. “I think it was a success. We had lots of people laughing, and staying late — and having a bit of fun.”

The event attracted curlers of all ages and abilities. “We had a brand-new team to the mixed league, brand new to curling and they decided to come into the bonspiel … that was a highlight for the organizing committee,” added Nichols.

She also acknowledged the support of the event’s major sponsors — West Kootenay Mechanical, Mitchell Supply, Cartwright’s Pub and Grant Thorton.
