The Kootenay Summer Games U14 girls basketball team had their first action together at the Provincial Tournament in Langley last weekend.

The team played four games and won one against tough competition.

On Friday, Sparwood’s Cameo Hanlon led the Koots with 13 points in a 41-32 loss to Vancouver Island Central.

Saturday the team fell to always tough Fraser Valley North 65-26 despite 14 points from Hanlon.

Later that day, the team fell to Northwest 41-33. Gina Oostlander from Trail scored eight points for Kootenay.

“We could have played better,” admitted coach Kim Matson. “We struggled with our offence and didn’t play good helpside D. The good news is we learned from our mistakes.”

The team got their first win on Sunday with a 45-23 win over Vancouver Island North led by 17 points from Hanlon and 12 from Michelle Matson.

Sunday the team fell 38-29 to Northeast, despite 14 points from Cranbrook’s Hunter Burton.

Matson and Hanlon were both selected to the B.C. provincial team selection camp which takes place this weekend in Vancouver.
