Nelson Junior Leafs started its regular season play with a tied game against Castlegar Rebels.

The score was matched at 5-5 in the final seconds of the third period, thanks to a late goal by rookie Colton McCarthy.

Two periods overtime settled nothing. Leaving the two teams to share the points on their first game of the 2012-13 season.

Earlier in the game, the Rebels opened with a score in the first minute of the game, and the Leafs responded with two goals before the first buzzer. By the end of the second, Leafs were ahead 4-3.

The third period saw the Rebels score twice more before the Leafs came back to tie the game.

McCarthy made two goals for Nelson, while Aaron Dunlap, Matt MacDonald and Carson Willians added one goal each.

Nelson take on the Rebels again at the Castlegar Complex Saturday night. After three more away games, the Leafs play again at home against Beaver Valley on September 29.
