Twenty-five riders and seven support people from RCMP and supporting enforcement agencies within South East District embarked on the 16th annual Cops for Kids Ride on Sept. 8.

The 2017 Ride took the team across the South Eastern corner of British Columbia to raise awareness and essential funds for children in medical, physical or traumatic crisis.

During their 10-day fundraising journey, Cops for Kids riders cycled into 18 different communities across South Eastern British Columbia, facing some mountainous terrain and everlasting summer heat.

The ride brought the team to Castlegar on Sunday at Boston Pizza. Riding for the second time this year was Castlegar Const. Ron George.

“This ride is such a strong reminder of the need in our communities left by the shortfalls of extended health care benefits and larger charities. Cops for Kids is able to assist children with items that aren’t covered by government programs or other groups, so it’s important for us to raise those essential funds for the children who need it most,” said George. “For me, the physical challenge of this ride is nothing compared to what these kids face every day. I know how many of the families that benefit from Cops for Kids come from our area, so it’s important that we help raise those funds also.”

Funds raised from this event stay within our communities to fund specific items required by children facing illness, disability or traumatic crisis through a grant application process. Since 2001 the group has raised over $4 million through their fundraising efforts.

Donations are graciously accepted at any time. To follow the team along their journey or to make a donation please visit the website at www.copsforkids.org.
