The Nelson Police Department says it has seized a large-calibre handgun that a man was allegedly waving around on Friday morning.
The man was reported to police at approximately 11 a.m. around the 300 block of Nelson Avenue, where Hume School is also located.
Several officers located the man and seized the firearm without incident. Police say it was not loaded, but that an investigation is underway and firearms charges may be recommended.
Nelson police have also arrested another man it had previously requested the public’s assistance in locating.
Aza Tobias Hanbury was wanted by both the Salmo RCMP and Nelson police for warrants and new charges related to alleged property crimes, dangerous driving and fleeing police.
A community member was credited with spotting Hanbury on Friday, and he was apprehended without incident on the 200 block of Baker Street.
Hanbury was also found to be in possession of several weapons including a loaded firearm.
“This person is a prolific offended who has shown a willingness to do whatever was necessary to evade arrest in the past,” said NPD Chief Donovan Fisher in a statement.
“This was potentially a very dangerous situation and compliments the officers for taking him into custody without incident.”
