People are taking notice of the active and outdoor lifestyle we are living here in Castlegar.

Expedia.ca travel blog writer Jennifer Cuellar has ranked Castlegar number 16 on a list of the most active cities in Canada.

Cities were considered based on a five-point ranking system looking at a variety of factors including number of marathons and hiking trails; access to bike paths, trails and races; per capita gyms including yoga studios and abundance of outdoor activities.

“That’s spectacular,” said Castlegar mayor Lawrence Chernoff upon hearing the news. “It’s really impressive that the community is getting recognized for the things we have and the amenities in the community.”

Chernoff is pleased that people from outside of the area are noticing Castlegar.

“We’re steering in the right direction, this kind of puts the stamp of approval on it, if other people are recognizing the things we do in the community,” he said. “When you look at the amenities available, and how we continue to build the bike paths, and everything else we are building, the recreation part of the community is definitely headed in the right direction.”

In the post Cuellar says, “It may look as pretty as a postcard nestled against the Selkirk Mountain Range, but Castlegar, British Columbia, isn’t afraid to get its hands dirty. This includes biking along Merry Creek Trails and Mel DeAnna Trail, renting a kayak or paddle board from Scotties Marina, and hiking up the aptly named Brilliant Overlook to see views of the whole city. And if you don’t mind walking around with some chalk on your fingertips, make your way to Water Line Walls, a top rock climbing spot in the area. Or if you want to stretch without the sense of peril, Viva Hot Yoga has the perfect balance of physical challenge meets spiritual exercise.”

Other B.C. cities on the list were No. 20 Smithers, No. 5 Prince George, No. 3 Whistler, No. 2 Golden and No. 1 Vancouver.
