LETTER: Neighbours of Castlegar sewage plant will keep lobbying

I am writing today regarding the City of Castlegar committee of a whole meeting of May 1. During this meeting the subject of the South Sewage Treatment Plant, still currently and previously signed as the South Castlegar Treatment Centre, was brought up.

In the June 15, 2011 Castlegar News, the issues relating to the Treatment Centre and resident’s concerns were reported. It is so coincidental that the answers to questions, by council and residents, were mimicked by the answers given recently at this meeting, by city staff.

It has now been 17 years since the neighborhood started the complaint process with the City of Castlegar and as yet we have seen no substantial change to our living conditions as a result of the smell. In fact, the odor has become worse this year than previously.

New neighborhoods are being developed in south Castlegar and their waste will all flow to this facility and yet no substantial efforts have been made to correct the issue of smell in the area.

It has been so bad recently that it was noted by people and businesses on Columbia Avenue in south Castlegar.

Your article in the Sept. 22, 2022 paper address the issues which the provincial authorities required correcting. This may have occurred as a direct result of our complaints to the province.

We, the residents of our neighborhood, have not forgotten the issue and are continuing to bring it to the attention of the City of Castlegar and others in authority.

John Shirley,

Castlegar B.C.
