The AA high school golf provincials are being held in Castlegar this year, and as host, our high school’s team is guaranteed a spot on the course.

The provincials will be held at Castlegar Golf Club from Monday, June 5 to Wednesday, June 7, with Stanley Humphries Secondary School (SHSS) acting as host.

“Come out and watch. There’ll be some pretty good golf taking place,” says Colin Overennay, an organizer for the event.

While SHSS is guaranteed a spot as host, the other teams are mostly yet to be decided as zone playoffs are ongoing. Overall, 16 teams from across B.C. — with both female and male players — will participate.

On Monday, teams will have the chance for a practice round before play begins on Tuesday at 1 p.m. Each team will have five players, and the best four scores of each round will count toward the team’s score.

Players can also place individually.

“It’s a team competition, so the schools against each other, but there is an individual aspect to it as well,” explains Overennay.

The final round will begin Wednesday at 9 a.m.

Though SHSS is guaranteed a spot in the provincials, the team still participated in the Kootenay Zone qualifier on Wednesday at Kokanee Springs. Results of that event were not available at press time, but one other team from our zone has also earned a spot at provincials through the qualifier.

“Castlegar is going to go play that qualifier as like a practice tournament,” Overennay explained beforehand. “So suppose they go out and they actually win that tournament, then it would the second place team would get the spot, and if Castlegar doesn’t win then whatever team wins gets the spot.”

The SHSS golf team qualified for last year’s provincials in West Vancouver, where they placed eighth.
