RDCK referendum on waste collection for Areas F, H and J takes place May 11

Rural residents will decide if they want curbside waste collection services

The final voting day for the Regional District of Central Kootenay’s referendum to determine if rural residents in Areas F, J and H want to establish curbside waste collection services is Saturday, May 11.

An early voting day was held on May 1 and 445 people voted in Area J and 450 people voted in Areas F and H.

Area J

If approved, the new service for portions of Area J, including Ootischenia and Robson, will build on the already established curbside recycling collection program and include about 1,380 properties.

Properties currently in the district’s recycling program will be eligible for the new garbage and organics collection streams.

If approved, the cost per household will be about $283, with a maximum total annual requisition of $406,818.

Areas F and H

A three-stream (garbage, recycling, and organics) curbside collection is being proposed for about 2,050 residences in defined portions of Areas F (Beasley, Bonnington, Six Mile) and H (Slocan Valley).

If approved, the cost per household will be about $280, with a maximum total annual requisition of $596,235.

Where to vote:

Area J — Castlegar and District Community Complex (2101 6th Ave., Castlegar) from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Areas F and H — RDCK Nelson Office (202 Lakeside Drive, Nelson) or the Crescent Valley Hall (1385 Highway 6, Crescent Valley) from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Mail ballot packages are available, but must be returned to the RDCK at Box 590, 202 Lakeside Drive, Nelson, BC by 8 p.m., Saturday, May 11.
