Fifty-three competitors took part in a bouldering competition at Selkirk College over the weekend, the most ever in an increasingly popular event now in its fourth year.

Kyle Chernenkoff had no idea he was being scouted for a Western Canadian team while playing hockey last spring. It wasn’t until the scout searched him and his family out at a tournament in Calgary that Chernenkoff first started thinking about taking his hockey to the next level.

The Castlegar Rebels have won the Kootenay Conference final with a 5-2 victory over the Fernie Ghostriders at the Castlegar Community Complex on Tuesday night.

Trail’s Thomas Abenante scored three points, and Connor Morgan notched the game-winning goal late in the second period as the Fernie Ghostriders doubled the Castlegar Rebels 4-2 in Game 5 of the KIJHL’s Kootenay Conference final Monday.

A pair of first-period goals staked the Rebels to a 3-1 Game 4 victory over the Fernie Ghostriders, and increased their series lead to 3-1 in the Kootenay Conference final.

Game 4 between the Castlegar Rebels and the Fernie Ghostriders was supposed to get underway at 7:30 p.m. but at the moment the puck was set to drop the visiting team was still en route to the Castlegar Community Complex.

Stuart Walton’s goal with 1:28 remaining in the third period lifted the Castlegar Rebels to a 5-3 victory and 2-1 series lead over the Fernie Ghostriders in front of 587 fans at the Complex Thursday night.

This photo was taken after the Atom hockey tournament held in Rossland over the weekend. The final game ended a tie of 7-7 after 5 minutes of overtime, so the banner was brought home jointly by two Castlegar Atom Teams: the Wolfpack and the Warriors.

Chris Thring had a gold medal to show his Little Constrictors when he taught class this week. Thring, head instructor at Valley Jiu Jitsu, won gold in the lightweight division of the BC Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Championships March 5 in Vancouver.

The 2011 KIJHL Kootenay Conference final is turning into a back-and-forth affair, after the Castlegar Rebels and Fernie Ghostriders each won once this week in the Elk Valley.
